Why is freight management so difficult?

Freight management can be a complex process, particularly for companies with a large number of locations or a wide range of products and services. Some of the problems with freight management include limited flexibility, high cost of forwarding, economic challenges, transport infrastructure issues, ocean volatility, and commoditization .

For instance, optimized routes and schedules may be less flexible and may not be able to accommodate last-minute changes or unexpected events. Apart from the financial challenges, the freight forwarding industry also has economic challenges that it faces daily. The common currency that is used for international trading is the US dollar. Daily, the exchange rates of the US dollar fluctuates .

However, there are ways to improve upon old systems. For example, companies can collaborate with suppliers to gain a more accurate picture of inbound freight spend or change freight terms with all trading partners so they pay for—and control—all inbound shipments Outsourcing to a third party that specializes in freight management is also an option if the project is too overwhelming
